Battery condition inspection for electric cars.
Electric Vehicle Battery Condition Inspection
SCC offers a battery condition and capacity check for used electric vehicles when necessary.
Electric vehicles have fewer moving parts compared to traditional combustion engine vehicles, leading to generally reduced repair and maintenance needs. However, there is ongoing discussion regarding the lifespan of electric vehicle batteries. The high-voltage battery is often the most expensive component of an electric vehicle, raising concerns about its condition and longevity when purchasing a used car. New electric vehicles come with a long battery warranty, but in Finland, there is a growing market of used electric vehicles with warranties that have expired. Various factors affect an electric vehicle battery's condition, including repair history, maintenance history, and usage and charging habits. High-voltage batteries are chemical energy storage devices that age and degrade with use. This aging and wear are normal.
When purchasing a used electric vehicle with an expired or soon-to-expire high-voltage battery warranty, it is recommended to have the high-voltage battery's condition physically inspected and diagnosed. This ensures a clear understanding of the battery's current state. SCC - Sports Car Center proactively examines the condition of its used electric vehicle batteries when their warranty is nearing expiration, the vehicle has an unusually high mileage, or there is any indication that the battery should be examined.
During a high-voltage battery inspection, the following checks are conducted:
- Visual inspection for external damage, dents, leaks, as well as checking mounts and cable connections.
- Usage history based on driving and charging habits.
- Performance based on the voltage and temperature of battery cells and modules.
- Remaining usable capacity calculated using values from the high-voltage battery's control unit.
- Reading error codes from the high-voltage system.
If necessary, the high-voltage battery is TÜV-certified tested by measuring its actual remaining capacity based on a driving cycle that runs the battery from full to empty. During this cycle, the energy discharged from the battery and other important parameters from the battery control unit are measured.
This ensures that customers do not have to worry about the battery's condition when purchasing a used electric vehicle and gathers valuable information on the condition of used electric vehicles.
